| FAQs about Bats and Bat Control Q: Bats fly around our house at night. Is there a big chance they could have rabies? A: Here in the United States the incidence of rabies from bats is extremely rare. Even in South America, where vampire bats can be found, contracting rabies from a bat is rare because humans are not typically the target of these bats. Q: What do bats eat? A: Bats eat insects such as mosquitoes, moths, crickets, gnats, roaches, beetles, and ants. Q: Do bats really go after people’s hair? A: Bats do not go after people’s hair. They are most likely trying to get the mosquitoes and other insects which are hovering around people’s heads. It’s when the person jumps up, upon seeing the nearby bat that entanglements may occur. Q: Are bats related to rodents? A: No, bats are not related to rodents. They are actually very clean animals who spend a lot of time grooming themselves. Q: How long do bats live? A: Bats can live up to 20 years or more. Q: Do bats bite humans? A: It is rare for bats to attack people. Bats are considered gentle creatures and usually will only attack a person in self-defense. Therefore, do not pick up or handle a bat as it may bite as it tries to protect itself. If you have any more questions, please contact me.
