| Identify Mosquito Damage Mosquitoes are vectors of life-threatening diseases throughout the world. The diseases include the Arboviral Encephalitides, Dengue Fever, Malaria, West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever and Heartworm. West Nile Virus has not only been found in mosquitoes, birds, humans, and pets, it has also been found in alligators and elephants. Most of these diseases cause large numbers of fatalities in other parts of the world, particularly in tropical regions, deserts and poor countries with limited health care West Nile Virus (WNV) is found in Africa, Europe and North America. Here in the United States, the first case was reported in New York City in 1999. Since that time, thousands of cases of the disease have been reported throughout the U.S., according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) records. Until recently, most mosquitoes were thought to be active only at dusk or dawn, however, the Asian Tiger mosquito has been found to bite mostly between the daytime hours of 10am and 3pm. It is found mostly in the southern half of the US, however, this mosquito continues to spread into new areas of the country; a disconcerting situation considering the mosquito is a vector of encephalitis in humans and horses as well as heartworm in pets.
