All About Rats & MiceAll About Rats and Mice

The two most common species of rats are the Norway or brown rat and the Roof or black rat.  Mice are much smaller than rats and include a variety of species.

Droppings, gnaw marks, and urine or musty odors are just a few signs of rat and mouse activity.  Droppings can number in the thousands with even just a small infestation of these rodents.

Rat and Mouse Control Options

Rodent repellent granules, rat & mouse traps, rodenticides, electronic rodent repellents and prevention are all methods of rodent control.

Granular Rodent Repellent Products

Dr. T’s Nature Products® Rat-A-Way™, rodent repellent granules usually work rat control - rat-a-wayby affecting the rat or mouse's sense of smell and taste. In addition, rodent repellent products such as Rat-A-Way™ raise the level of carbon dioxide in their blood, confusing the animal.

The rodent repellent granules should be placed in a band around the outside perimeter of homes, warehouses, storage areas and barns. When this rodent repellent product is spread around the outside of a building, it can deter rodents from entering the structure.

Studies have shown a 72% to 90% reduction in rodent activity within areas treated with Rat-A-Way™.

Prevention

Sanitation efforts in conjunction with rodent proofing provide the best rodent control solution to reduce or completely eliminate conditions that attract rats and mice.

Sealing off cracks, holes, and other openings in the foundation of your home will help prevent rodents from entering your home.  These rodents only need a very small opening to enter your home.

Rat and mouse control options - prevention

Carefully storing your food and eliminating clutter in and around your home will also go a long way in rodent control.

For rodent control outside your home, make sure to keep garbage cans tightly closed, keep lawns cut short, clear away plant debris from around the building's foundation, trim back overgrown bushes, fill gaps in stone walls, and remove wood or stone piles where rodents can hide.

Trimming back tree branches can help keep rats, mice and squirrels from entering your homes through holes and small openings in your attic soffits.

Check your roof, eaves, and soffits for any holes.  Remember, rats and mice can often squeeze through an opening the size of a nickel, so be sure to seal off any holes you find.
