All About Slugs and SnailsAll About Slugs and Snails

Slugs and snails are in the Mollusks class of Gastropoda, which is the second largest class in the animal kingdom (the largest class is insects).

Snails cause the same damage to plants that slugs do.  The start of “slug and snail season” is at that beginning of spring and ends in early fall.

Most people are not aware of the extent of their slug and snail problems because these mollusks are nocturnal and feed in cycles.

Slug and Snail Control Options

Unfortunately, we cannot count on nature to help with our slug problems because many predators including birds, squirrels, and mice stay away from slugs and snails; they taste horrible.

Environmental Control

By making the environment in a garden or yard less favorable to slugs and snails, it may help in the steps toward controlling these destructive pests , but slugs and snails have similar tastes and needs as gardeners and plants do.

Slug and snail control options - gardenFor example, decreasing the amount of moisture in their habitat areas may help but most plants need that moisture to thrive.

In addition, removing slug-and-snail-favored plantings such as hostas and strawberries and landscaping can help in their control, but strawberries are delicious and hostas are a beautiful edition to gardens and landscaping.

So most environmental control options aren’t favorable to gardeners for resolving this problem and remember only a fraction of the population of these animals is on the surface at any given time and most are feeding while you sleep.

Control Products

Dr. T’s™ Slug & Snail Killer

A better way to control slugs & snails is Dr. T’s™ Slug & Snail Killer.   Because slugs and snails cause damage from feeding and their slime trail causes leaf deterioration,  quick control is critical.
Slug and snail control options - DT125
Dr. T’s™ Slug & Snail Killer is a highly effective, safe method of controlling slugs and snails.  This fast-acting formula has a powerful active ingredient, sodium ferric, that attracts these mollusks.

When they eat the bait, it interferes with their digestive process, forcing them to stop feeding immediately.  They crawl back into their shelters and die within 3-6 days.

Dr. T’s™ Slug & Snail Killer can be used around pets and wildlife and remains effective after rain or watering. It does not kill beneficial insects.

As always, read and follow all directions carefully.

Copper Barriers

For additional protection for your plants try a copper barrier around them that you can purchase in strips or sheets.  The copper appears to shock the slugs and snails.
