| Identify Slug and Snail Damage Slugs Most people are not aware of the extent of their slug problem because they are nocturnal and feed in cycles. An indicator of a slug infestation is the slimy, mucous trail left behind. It’s very shimmery when dried and can be seen on plants and on the ground. Slugs damage plants and seedlings beginning in the spring and if left unchecked, they can continue to devour plant leaves and plantings throughout the summer and into early fall when the first frost occurs. They may eat holes in the leaves as well as completely consume entire seedlings – often overnight!! In addition to this destruction, the holes and tears that the slugs leave behind are entryways for plant diseases such as plant rot, fungus, viruses and bacteria. Snails Snails cause the same damage to plants that slugs do. The start of “snail season” is at that beginning of spring when the weather warms and spring showers bring the needed moisture to their habitat. If no steps are taken to control these destructive mollusks, they can devour plant leaves and plantings until early fall. Snails also leave a slimy trail of mucous which helps the snail find its way back to a favorite plant or area. They may eat holes in the leaves as well as completely consume entire seedlings – often overnight!! In addition to this destruction, the holes and tears that the snails leave behind are entryways for plant rot, fungus, viruses and bacteria that spread many plant diseases. These holes and the slime snails leave on plants can either result in the plant’s destruction or make the plant undesirable, often resulting in financial loss for a gardener or farmer.
