All About SnakesAll About Snakes

Snakes instill a very deep sense of fear in many people.  We will often do whatever we can to keep a snake away from our homes, family, pets, yards and gardens.

There are about 250 species of snakes in the United States and Canada.  Only two groups are venomous - the coral snake and the pit vipers.  The pit vipers include the cottonmouth/water moccasin, copperhead, and rattlesnake.

Identify Snake Damage

Snakes do not typically cause damage to property but they do instill a very deep sense of fear in many people.  Many will often do whatever we can to keep a snake away from our homes, family, pets, yards and gardens.

The springtime is often when people find snakes in their yards as the snakes awaken from hibernation and go in search of their first meal of the year.  Since snakes' food preferences include mice, rats, and other nuisance pests, snakes can actually be beneficial to humans.

Identify snake damageWith the encroachment of humans on snake habitats, interactions between snakes and humans are becoming more common.  Most snakes will attempt to get away from people and will only attack if they feel threatened.

However, fatalities from snake bites and constriction occur throughout the world every year, killing thousands of people annually. Snake-bite victims must be treated very quickly with anti-venom if the snake is poisonous.  Fatalities typically occur when the victim is far from medical facilities with anti-venom.

Non-venomous snakes also bite humans, although these bites are not poisonous and do not need to be treated with anti-venom.  These bites should be taken seriously though, because they are considered puncture wounds and should be treated accordingly by a medical professional.
